Centella asiatica and Stress: Evidence Overview

Centella asiatica, also known as gotu kola, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for various health concerns, including supporting mental clarity and reducing anxiety. In recent years, some scientific studies have explored its effects on stress and anxiety in both animal and human models.

Preclinical studies have shown that extracts of Centella asiatica can modulate neurotransmitter systems, such as GABAergic activity, which is associated with anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects. Animal models suggest possible anti-stress and anti-anxiety benefits, potentially due to antioxidant and neuroprotective properties of its triterpenoid compounds (e.g., asiaticoside, madecassoside).

Limited small-scale human trials have reported reductions in self-reported anxiety and stress-related symptoms with Centella asiatica supplementation. For example, a randomized, double-blind study (J Ethnopharmacol. 2000) observed decreased anxiety scores in subjects taking Centella asiatica extract compared to placebo. However, these trials often have small sample sizes, short durations, and methodological limitations.

Overall, while there is preliminary scientific evidence suggesting Centella asiatica may help manage stress and anxiety, the evidence base is not robust. Larger, high-quality clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and establish appropriate dosing and safety for long-term use.
