Australian Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) has a long history of traditional use among Indigenous Australian communities and in aromatherapy practices, primarily for its calming, grounding aroma. Sandalwood oil, including that derived from Australian varieties, is often used in incense, perfumes, and massage oils purported to promote relaxation and reduce stress. This traditional use is largely extrapolated from the broader historical utilization of sandalwood species (notably Indian sandalwood, Santalum album) in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicines for calming the mind and spirit.
While some limited scientific studies have evaluated the effects of sandalwood oil inhalation (especially Santalum album) on physiological parameters related to stress, there is very little direct research specifically on Australian Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum).
