Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Plumbago zeylanica, commonly known as Ceylon leadwort or chitrak, has a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Siddha. In these traditions, it is valued for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. Classical texts mention its application in treating various skin diseases, ulcers, and infections, often in the form of topical pastes or decoctions. While there is some in vitro evidence that extracts of Plumbago zeylanica exhibit antibacterial activity—including activity against Staphylococcus aureus—these studies are limited in scale, and there is a lack of robust clinical trials supporting its efficacy specifically for Staphylococcal infections in humans. The main phytochemical thought to contribute to its antimicrobial properties is plumbagin. However, the use of Plumbago zeylanica for Staph infections is primarily justified by traditional knowledge rather than modern scientific validation. As such, while preliminary studies are encouraging, current evidence does not allow for a high confidence rating. Traditional use and limited laboratory studies merit a moderate evidence score, but further research is necessary to confirm safety and efficacy in the context of Staph infections.
