Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Chinese Chive (Allium tuberosum), known as "jiu cai" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in Chinese herbal practice. Traditionally, it is valued for its warming properties, ability to tonify the kidney yang, and support overall vitality. It is not specifically documented in the major TCM classics as a primary treatment for Staphylococcus infections. However, there is some traditional use of Chinese Chive seeds or leaves in topical poultices for wounds and skin infections, reflecting a broad historical belief in the antimicrobial properties of Allium species (including garlic and onion relatives). The scientific evidence directly supporting its efficacy against Staph infections is extremely limited. A handful of in vitro studies have noted mild antibacterial activity of Allium tuberosum extracts against various bacteria, including some strains of Staphylococcus aureus, but these findings have not been substantiated by clinical trials or robust animal studies. Thus, while its use for this purpose is rooted in tradition and some preliminary laboratory findings, there is insufficient evidence for strong support or recommendation.
