Evidence supporting the use of: Bisabolene
For the health condition: Staph Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bisabolene is a naturally occurring sesquiterpene found in various plants, notably in chamomile and some essential oils. Its use against Staphylococcus aureus infections is supported by preliminary scientific research, but not by a long-standing traditional use. Several in vitro studies have shown that bisabolene and bisabolene-rich essential oils exhibit antibacterial activity against S. aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA). For example, research published in peer-reviewed journals has demonstrated that bisabolene can disrupt bacterial cell membranes and inhibit growth of S. aureus in laboratory settings. However, these findings are mostly limited to cell culture experiments, and there is a lack of clinical trials or robust animal studies confirming its efficacy in humans. No major health organizations currently recommend bisabolene as a treatment for staph infections. In summary, while the compound shows promise as an antibacterial agent in preclinical research, the evidence base is still preliminary (rated 2/5), and its use for treating staph infections is not established in clinical practice.
