Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aureobasidium pullulans is a species of black yeast-like fungus that has attracted attention primarily for its ability to produce various bioactive compounds, including enzymes, polysaccharides (notably pullulan), and secondary metabolites with antimicrobial properties. Scientific studies—primarily in vitro—have demonstrated that extracts and metabolites from A. pullulans can inhibit the growth of several pathogenic bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, the primary causative agent of Staph infections. The mechanisms are thought to relate to the production of antimicrobial peptides and polysaccharides that disrupt bacterial cell membranes or inhibit biofilm formation. However, while these laboratory findings are promising and suggest potential use as an adjunct or alternative therapy, direct clinical evidence in humans is lacking. There are no published randomized controlled trials evaluating A. pullulans (or its extracts) for prevention or treatment of Staph infections in humans. Most evidence is restricted to petri dish and animal model studies. As such, while the scientific rationale exists and preliminary results are supportive, the evidence base is currently weak. No traditional medicinal use of A. pullulans for Staph infections has been documented. Thus, A. pullulans is of scientific interest for its anti-Staphylococcal properties, but its use in clinical practice for this purpose is not yet validated.
