Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Achyranthes bidentata is widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, including sprains. Its use is primarily rooted in traditional practice rather than robust scientific evidence. According to classical TCM texts, Achyranthes bidentata is believed to invigorate blood circulation, strengthen bones and tendons, and reduce swelling and pain, which makes it a common prescription for traumatic injuries such as sprains and bruises. Several modern pharmacological studies have identified anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and circulation-promoting properties in extracts of Achyranthes bidentata, which could provide a plausible mechanism for its traditional use. However, these studies are generally preclinical (in vitro or animal models) and there is a lack of high-quality clinical trials specifically evaluating its efficacy for sprains in humans. Therefore, while the herb’s use for sprains is well supported by tradition and some laboratory findings, rigorous clinical validation is still lacking.
