In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), strawberries are considered beneficial for the Spleen system. The Spleen in TCM is not the same as the anatomical spleen in Western medicine, but is instead a functional concept associated with digestion, transformation of nutrients, and energy production. Strawberries are classified as sweet and slightly cool, and are believed to nourish the yin, generate fluids, and support Spleen and stomach function, especially in cases of heat or dryness. They are said to “harmonize the Spleen” and “quench thirst,” making them a gentle dietary recommendation for individuals with mild Spleen deficiency symptoms such as poor appetite or fatigue.
However, there is limited scientific evidence directly supporting the use of strawberries specifically for Spleen function, either in the TCM or Western sense. Modern research does show that strawberries are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and fiber, which can contribute to overall digestive health. These properties may indirectly support some functions analogous to the TCM Spleen concept. Nonetheless, the traditional use in TCM is the primary justification for recommending strawberries for Spleen support, rather than direct scientific validation.
