Pomegranate (Punica granatum) has been used in various traditional medicinal systems, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. In TCM, the Spleen is a key organ associated with digestion, transformation, and transportation of nutrients. Pomegranate is sometimes included in remedies for digestive disorders, diarrhea, and to "tonify" the blood, indirectly supporting spleen function. Its use is largely based on its astringent properties, which are believed to help stabilize and bind the intestines and stop diarrhea—an issue often attributed to "Spleen deficiency" in TCM. However, there is limited direct reference to pomegranate as a primary Spleen tonic in major classical texts. Most traditional use appears to be focused on gastrointestinal complaints rather than direct spleen tonification.

From a scientific perspective, research on pomegranate has focused on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects, as well as potential benefits for cardiovascular and metabolic health. There is little to no scientific research specifically linking pomegranate consumption to enhanced spleen function or health, either in traditional or biomedical contexts. Therefore, the use of pomegranate for spleen support is justified mainly by tradition, with indirect rationale and limited clinical evidence.
