Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) has a long history of use in traditional Southeast Asian medicine, where various parts of the fruit have been employed to support digestive health, reduce inflammation, and generally "strengthen the body." In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Spleen is not only an anatomical organ but also a functional concept associated with digestion, nutrient absorption, and energy production. Mangosteen is sometimes used in TCM and other traditional systems to "tonify" or support the Spleen, particularly in cases of digestive weakness or diarrhea. This traditional use is based on empirical observations rather than mechanistic scientific evidence.

From a scientific perspective, mangosteen contains xanthones and other polyphenolic compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest these compounds may benefit gut health or modulate immune responses, but direct evidence connecting mangosteen to specific Spleen function, as defined in biomedical terms, is lacking. There are no robust clinical trials validating its use for supporting the Spleen body system in humans. Thus, the primary justification for its use in this context remains traditional, with limited scientific support at this time.
