Evidence supporting the use of: Glehnia root
For the body system: Spleen
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Glehnia root (Glehnia littoralis), also known as Bei Sha Shen in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has been traditionally used primarily for its effects on the Lung and Stomach systems, particularly to nourish Yin, moisten dryness, and alleviate cough. While TCM sometimes mentions its use for "Spleen" support, this is usually secondary to its primary indications. The Spleen in TCM is associated with digestion and energy production, and while Glehnia root is included in some formulations aimed at nourishing Yin and supporting fluids, its direct effect on the Spleen system is not strongly emphasized in classic TCM literature.
Scientific research on Glehnia root has focused mostly on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties, with a few studies supporting its potential to protect gastric mucosa or influence gastrointestinal function. However, there is little to no robust scientific evidence specifically validating its use for supporting the Spleen, either in the TCM sense or in terms of the anatomical spleen in Western medicine.
In summary, the use of Glehnia root to support the Spleen system is primarily justified by tradition, with modest historical support and limited to no direct scientific validation for this purpose.
