Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Dendrobium, a genus of orchids, has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries. In TCM, Dendrobium (often referred to as "Shi Hu") is believed to nourish the Yin, moisten dryness, and support the Spleen and Stomach systems. The "Spleen" in TCM does not directly correspond to the anatomical spleen in Western medicine, but rather refers to a conceptual organ system responsible for digestion, nutrient absorption, and energy (Qi) production. Classical texts such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" and "Compendium of Materia Medica" describe Dendrobium as beneficial for relieving dryness, enhancing fluid production, and supporting digestive health—attributes linked to the Spleen system in TCM theory. However, scientific research validating these traditional uses is limited and primarily focused on Dendrobium’s antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory properties. While some studies have explored its effects on metabolism and gastrointestinal function in animal models, there is currently insufficient high-quality clinical evidence to confirm Dendrobium’s efficacy for supporting the Spleen system as understood in TCM or in Western physiological terms. Therefore, the justification for Dendrobium’s use to support the Spleen is primarily traditional, with a moderate level of historical evidence but limited direct scientific validation.
