Broussonetia, particularly Broussonetia papyrifera (paper mulberry), is used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM theory, the "Spleen" refers to a functional system responsible for digestion, nutrient absorption, and energy production, not strictly the anatomical organ. Broussonetia is considered to tonify the Spleen and help manage symptoms such as poor appetite, fatigue, and loose stools, which are interpreted as "Spleen deficiency." Its use is documented in classical herbal texts, where various parts of the plant, especially the fruit (known as "Zhe Pi"), are included in formulas targeting Spleen function. However, scientific validation for these specific effects is limited. Modern pharmacological studies on Broussonetia focus more on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. There are a few in vitro and animal studies suggesting benefits for metabolic health, but direct evidence supporting the improvement of Spleen-related functions (as defined by TCM) is scarce. As a result, while Broussonetia’s application to support the Spleen is well established in tradition, the scientific evidence directly linking it to Spleen system support remains minimal.
