Evidence supporting the use of: White Pepper
For the health condition: Sore Throat
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
White pepper (Piper nigrum) has a long-standing history in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Asian cultures, for managing sore throat and related symptoms. In traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, white pepper is believed to possess warming and stimulating qualities that can help "dispel cold" and relieve symptoms such as throat discomfort or mild sore throat. The remedy often involves mixing ground white pepper with honey or warm fluids to soothe the throat.
However, scientific evidence supporting these uses is minimal. While black and white pepper do contain piperine, which has some anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties in laboratory studies, there is no robust clinical research demonstrating that white pepper is effective for treating or relieving sore throat in humans. Most of its use for sore throat is based on anecdotal accounts or historical practice rather than controlled clinical trials. Overall, its use for this indication is justified by tradition, with very limited scientific validation.
