Evidence supporting the use of: Sandy Everlasting
For the health condition: Sore Throat
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sandy Everlasting (Helichrysum arenarium), also known as dwarf everlast or immortelle, has been used in traditional herbal medicine across Europe for a variety of ailments, including sore throat. The flowers of this plant were commonly prepared as infusions or gargles to soothe irritations of the mouth and throat. Historical texts and folk medicine sources document its use for treating upper respiratory tract discomfort, attributing its benefits to its anti-inflammatory and mild antimicrobial properties.
However, scientific validation for these specific uses is limited. While some studies have identified flavonoids and other bioactive compounds in Helichrysum species that possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, there is a lack of robust clinical trials directly assessing its efficacy for sore throat in humans. Most of the available evidence is based on in vitro experiments or traditional knowledge rather than modern clinical research. Therefore, while the use of Sandy Everlasting for sore throat is justified by tradition and some plausible pharmacological rationale, the overall evidence supporting its effectiveness remains modest and largely historical.
