For the health condition: Sore Throat
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Milkweed refers to various species in the genus Asclepias, most commonly Asclepias syriaca or common milkweed. The use of milkweed for sore throats is primarily rooted in North American Indigenous and traditional herbal medicine. Historical ethnobotanical records indicate that some Native American groups used tea or infusions made from parts of the milkweed plant (often the root or leaves) to alleviate symptoms of sore throat and other respiratory ailments. However, these uses are based on anecdotal evidence and oral tradition rather than systematic scientific research.
Currently, there is very little, if any, clinical or pharmacological research validating the efficacy or safety of milkweed for treating sore throat. Modern herbal references often mention milkweed's traditional use, but they also caution about the plant's potential toxicity, as some species contain cardiac glycosides and other compounds that can be harmful if misused. Overall, while there is documentation of traditional use, the scientific evidence supporting milkweed for sore throat is minimal to nonexistent.
