Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Liverwort (Marchantia polymorpha and related species) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, especially in Europe. The use of liverwort for sore throat stems largely from the “Doctrine of Signatures,” an old belief that plants resembling human organs could treat ailments of those organs. Because liverwort leaves were thought to resemble the liver, they were historically used to treat liver ailments, but their application expanded to other issues such as respiratory and throat problems, including sore throat. There is, however, very little scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of liverwort for this condition. Modern pharmacological studies on liverworts are limited and have focused primarily on their antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties in vitro, not specifically on sore throat relief or clinical outcomes in humans. No high-quality clinical trials have validated its traditional use for sore throat. As such, its reputation for treating sore throat is based more on historical usage than scientific validation, and any potential benefit is not well-documented in the scientific literature.
