Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Commiphora species, such as Commiphora myrrha (myrrh), have a long history of traditional use for throat and oral conditions, including sore throat. Myrrh resin has been used in traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Unani, where it is valued for its purported anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Historical records suggest that myrrh was often included in mouthwashes or gargles to soothe sore throats and oral infections.

While there are some in vitro studies demonstrating antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities of Commiphora extracts, clinical evidence in humans specifically for sore throat is minimal and of low quality. A few small trials and anecdotal reports suggest possible symptomatic relief, but robust, controlled clinical studies are lacking. Modern herbal medicine references continue to list myrrh for sore throat based largely on tradition rather than strong scientific validation. Therefore, the use of Commiphora for sore throat is primarily justified by traditional rather than scientific evidence, and the quality of evidence supporting its efficacy is limited.
