Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Coin-leaved desmodium (Desmodium gangeticum) is traditionally used in various systems of folk medicine, particularly in Ayurveda, to treat ailments such as sore throat, cough, and respiratory infections. The roots and leaves are often incorporated into decoctions or herbal preparations aimed at soothing throat irritation and reducing inflammation. Historical Ayurvedic texts mention Desmodium gangeticum (known as "Shalaparni") as an ingredient in formulations for respiratory tract health, including sore throat. However, while the traditional use is well documented, scientific validation is limited. Some laboratory studies have suggested that extracts of Desmodium gangeticum may have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which could theoretically contribute to relief in sore throat conditions. However, there are no robust clinical trials or direct scientific evidence specifically supporting its efficacy for sore throat in humans. Thus, its use for this purpose is primarily justified by a long history of traditional practice rather than rigorous scientific validation.
