Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cistus, particularly species such as Cistus incanus (also known as rockrose), has a long-standing history of use in traditional medicine for soothing sore throats and related upper respiratory discomforts. In Mediterranean folk medicine, Cistus infusions and teas have been used for generations to alleviate symptoms of throat irritation, cough, and mild infections. The plant is rich in polyphenols, which are believed to contribute to its purported antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. However, robust clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness is limited. A few modern in vitro studies have indicated that Cistus extracts may inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and viruses associated with respiratory infections, potentially providing a plausible mechanism for its traditional use. Nevertheless, these findings have not yet been translated into large-scale, high-quality human clinical trials specifically targeting sore throat relief. Therefore, while Cistus is commonly used in traditional medicine for sore throat, current scientific validation remains preliminary and insufficient for strong evidence-based recommendations.
