Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bee propolis has been traditionally used for centuries as a natural remedy for sore throats and other oral or upper respiratory conditions. Recent scientific studies have provided some evidence supporting its use for sore throat. Propolis contains flavonoids and phenolic compounds with demonstrated antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Laboratory research has shown that propolis extracts can inhibit the growth of bacteria commonly linked to throat infections, such as Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus. Clinical trials—though generally small in scale—have reported that propolis throat sprays or lozenges can reduce throat pain and inflammation, and may speed up recovery from pharyngitis compared to placebo. However, systematic reviews note that most of these studies have limitations, including small sample sizes, lack of blinding, and variability in propolis formulations. The overall quality of evidence is thus considered moderate but promising. No major safety concerns have been reported for short-term use, but allergic reactions are possible, especially in people allergic to bee products. In summary, the use of bee propolis for sore throat is supported by both historical tradition and emerging, though not yet robust, scientific evidence.
