Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aloe, particularly Aloe vera, has a long history of traditional use for soothing a sore throat. In various traditional medicine systems, Aloe vera gel has been consumed (usually diluted) or used as a gargle to relieve throat irritation, owing to its perceived cooling, soothing, and anti-inflammatory effects. The mucilaginous gel is believed to coat the mucous membranes, thereby reducing discomfort and providing temporary relief from irritation. Some small-scale or preliminary studies suggest that Aloe vera may have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which could theoretically benefit sore throat symptoms, but robust clinical evidence is lacking. Most of the support for using Aloe in sore throat remedies comes from traditional practices and anecdotal reports rather than well-designed clinical trials.

While Aloe vera is widely recognized for topical use in burns and minor skin irritations, oral use—especially for sore throat—is less established in scientific literature. Overall, the strength of evidence supporting Aloe's effectiveness for sore throat is weak, and safety concerns exist regarding improper use or ingestion of unprocessed Aloe products. As a result, Aloe's use for sore throat is primarily justified by traditional use rather than strong scientific validation.
