Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Agastache, commonly known as Korean mint or huò xiāng (藿香) in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal practices. In TCM, Agastache is frequently included in formulas to address symptoms such as sore throat, cough, and respiratory discomfort, often attributed to its aromatic and purported antimicrobial properties. Classical texts and materia medica cite its use as a remedy for “wind-heat” conditions, which can include sore throat as a symptom. However, while its traditional use for sore throat is well documented, there is limited scientific research directly evaluating Agastache’s efficacy for this specific condition. Some phytochemical studies suggest the presence of compounds with mild anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity, but these have not been robustly linked to clinical outcomes for sore throat in modern clinical trials. Therefore, its use for sore throat is justified by traditional evidence, but scientific validation remains sparse, and the overall strength of evidence is modest.
