Vitamin D is scientifically recognized for its critical role in calcium absorption and bone health, processes that are fundamentally dependent on the proper function of the small intestine. The active form of vitamin D (calcitriol) increases the efficiency of intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate, both of which are essential for bone mineralization. Deficiency in vitamin D leads to reduced calcium absorption in the small intestine, which can result in conditions such as rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. Several studies have demonstrated that vitamin D receptors are expressed in the epithelial cells of the small intestine, particularly in the duodenum, where active calcium transport occurs. By upregulating the expression of calcium-binding proteins in intestinal cells, vitamin D directly enhances the ability of the small intestine to absorb dietary calcium. While vitamin D's primary clinical associations are with bone health, these effects are mediated through its action on the small intestine. However, beyond calcium and phosphate absorption, there is less direct evidence that vitamin D supports other aspects of small intestine function, such as motility, barrier integrity, or immune regulation, although emerging research suggests possible roles in gut mucosal immunity.
