Vitamin D (ergocalciferol, or vitamin D2) plays an important role in the health of the small intestine, primarily through its regulation of calcium and phosphate absorption. Scientific studies have demonstrated that vitamin D is crucial for facilitating the active transport of calcium across the intestinal epithelium. The presence of adequate vitamin D increases the synthesis of calcium-binding proteins in the small intestine, enhancing the efficiency of calcium absorption from dietary sources. This process is critical for overall bone health and metabolic functions dependent on calcium.

Deficiency in vitamin D can lead to decreased intestinal absorption of calcium, resulting in conditions like rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. These disorders are characterized by impaired bone mineralization, but their underlying mechanism is largely mediated by insufficient calcium uptake in the small intestine due to low vitamin D levels.
