In the context of the small intestine, several studies in animal models and some limited human research suggest that Vitamin C can help protect the intestinal mucosa from oxidative stress and may assist in maintaining barrier function. For example, oxidative stress is implicated in conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and Vitamin C’s antioxidant properties have been studied for their potential ameliorative effects.
