Unsaturated fatty acids, including monounsaturated (like oleic acid) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (like omega-3 and omega-6), have a scientifically supported role in supporting small intestine health, though the evidence is moderate rather than robust. Research indicates that unsaturated fatty acids can positively influence intestinal barrier integrity by modulating tight junction proteins and reducing inflammation. Some studies show that omega-3 fatty acids, in particular, reduce intestinal inflammation and support mucosal healing in animal models and in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Furthermore, unsaturated fatty acids have been shown to alter the gut microbiota composition in favorable ways, which may contribute to overall gut health.

However, most of the evidence comes from animal studies or in vitro experiments, with fewer large-scale clinical trials directly linking unsaturated fatty acid supplementation to specific improvements in small intestine function in healthy humans. Nevertheless, their anti-inflammatory properties and effects on the intestinal lining provide a plausible mechanism for their supportive role.
