Saccharomyces is a genus of yeast, and the most commonly studied species for human health is Saccharomyces boulardii. There is strong scientific evidence that S. boulardii, as a probiotic, supports small intestine health, particularly in maintaining and restoring the balance of intestinal microflora. Multiple randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials have demonstrated its efficacy in preventing and treating antibiotic-associated diarrhea, traveler’s diarrhea, and some forms of infectious diarrhea—conditions that often involve the small intestine. The proposed mechanisms include inhibition of pathogenic bacteria, enhancement of intestinal barrier function, and modulation of local immune responses. Additionally, S. boulardii has been studied in the context of inflammatory bowel diseases and irritable bowel syndrome, with some positive results for symptom reduction. Most research focuses on S. boulardii rather than other Saccharomyces species, and effects may not generalize beyond this species. There is less evidence for benefits in healthy individuals without gastrointestinal challenges. Nonetheless, the body of evidence supports the targeted use of S. boulardii for supporting the small intestine, especially during or after episodes of dysbiosis or infection. It is important to note that “Saccharomyces (unspecified)” does not guarantee the inclusion of S. boulardii, and other species such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae do not have the same clinical validation for small intestinal support.
