Ox bile is used as a digestive aid, particularly for individuals who have difficulties with fat digestion due to insufficient bile production or release—conditions such as biliary insufficiency or after gallbladder removal. Scientifically, bile acids are essential for emulsifying dietary fats in the small intestine, facilitating their absorption. Supplementing with ox bile can help mimic natural bile function in these cases. Several clinical studies and reviews (e.g., Hofmann, 1999; Northfield, 1973) suggest that bile acid supplementation improves fat absorption and reduces symptoms like steatorrhea (fatty stools) in patients with bile acid deficiency. However, evidence is strongest for use in specific populations (e.g., post-cholecystectomy, certain liver diseases) rather than the general population. There is limited research supporting ox bile for broader "small intestine support" or in people with normal bile function.
