Lipids, while a broad and unspecified category, are essential macronutrients that play a critical role in the structure and function of the small intestine. Scientifically, dietary lipids are necessary for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) and provide energy for enterocytes, the cells lining the small intestine. The process of lipid digestion and absorption occurs predominantly in the small intestine, where bile acids emulsify fats, and pancreatic enzymes break them down into fatty acids and monoglycerides for absorption. Several studies have demonstrated that a deficiency in dietary lipids can impair the integrity and function of the small intestinal mucosa, leading to malabsorption and nutritional deficiencies. Furthermore, certain lipids, such as medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), have been used therapeutically to support patients with malabsorptive disorders or short bowel syndrome, as they are more easily absorbed than long-chain triglycerides.
