Lentils are a well-known legume, recognized for their high protein and fiber content, as well as a rich supply of micronutrients such as folate, iron, and magnesium. Scientific evidence suggests that dietary fiber, which is abundant in lentils, plays a significant role in supporting the health of the small intestine and overall digestive tract. Dietary fiber aids in the regulation of bowel movements, helps maintain gut motility, and provides fermentable substrates for beneficial gut bacteria. Specifically, soluble fiber in lentils can be fermented by microbiota in the colon to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which have positive effects on gut lining integrity and immune regulation. However, the bulk of direct research focuses on fiber-rich diets rather than lentils specifically, and most benefits are associated with general gut health rather than targeted effects on the small intestine alone. There is limited research directly linking lentil consumption with improved small intestine function or disease outcomes, such as in celiac disease or Crohn’s disease.
