Lactoferrin is a glycoprotein naturally present in various secretory fluids, including milk, and is known for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immune-modulating activities. Regarding support for the small intestine, several scientific studies have investigated lactoferrin’s effects on gut health. Research has shown that lactoferrin can inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella in the gastrointestinal tract while promoting the proliferation of beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. Additionally, lactoferrin has been demonstrated to reduce intestinal inflammation and improve mucosal integrity in animal models and some small human trials.

Clinical evidence is growing but still limited. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in J Pediatr Gastroenterol Nutr (2012) found that lactoferrin supplementation reduced the incidence of enteric infections in children. Further, lactoferrin has been explored as an adjunct therapy in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in infants, with some studies reporting reduced severity or incidence of these conditions. However, large-scale, high-quality trials in adults are lacking, and the mechanism of action in the small intestine is still being clarified.

In summary, there is scientific evidence supporting lactoferrin’s beneficial role in the small intestine, particularly for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory actions. However, the strength of evidence is moderate, warranting a rating of 3 out of 5.
