Lactobacillus is a genus of probiotic bacteria commonly used to support intestinal health, including that of the small intestine. Scientific evidence supports its use for this purpose. Multiple clinical studies have shown that certain strains of Lactobacillus can help maintain or restore a healthy balance of gut microbiota, especially after disturbances such as antibiotic use or gastrointestinal infections. This balance is critical for optimal function of the small intestine, which is responsible for nutrient absorption and acts as a barrier against harmful microbes.
Specifically, strains such as Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Lactobacillus acidophilus have been shown in randomized controlled trials to reduce the incidence and severity of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and infectious diarrhea. Some evidence also suggests potential benefits in managing symptoms of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), both of which involve dysfunction in the small intestine.
