Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) is the biologically active form of folate, a B-vitamin essential for DNA synthesis, repair, and methylation reactions. The glucosamine salt is a stable, bioavailable form used in supplements. While folate is critical for overall health, evidence specifically linking 5-MTHF to direct support of small intestine function is limited. There is scientific validation that 5-MTHF supports gastrointestinal health in a general sense—folate deficiency can cause gastrointestinal symptoms like mucosal atrophy, malabsorption, and diarrhea, and supplementation corrects these issues. Additionally, the small intestine is the primary site for folate absorption, and maintaining adequate folate levels is necessary for the integrity and renewal of the intestinal mucosa. Some research suggests that folate may play a role in protecting intestinal cells from damage and supporting normal cellular turnover, but these effects are broad and not exclusive to 5-MTHF or the small intestine. Overall, while 5-MTHF is important for intestinal health due to its role in cellular metabolism and mucosal maintenance, there is limited direct clinical evidence that it specifically "supports the small intestine" as a targeted action. Most uses are based on its general necessity for rapidly dividing cells, which include those of the intestinal lining.
