Gum Arabic, also known as acacia gum, is a complex mixture of glycoproteins and polysaccharides derived from the sap of the Acacia senegal tree. There is moderate scientific evidence supporting its beneficial effects on the small intestine and overall gut health. Gum Arabic is a soluble dietary fiber that resists digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract and reaches the colon largely intact, where it is fermented by the gut microbiota. Several studies have shown that Gum Arabic acts as a prebiotic, selectively stimulating the growth of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. This can lead to improved intestinal barrier function, modulation of inflammatory responses, and enhanced production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like butyrate, which are vital for colonocyte health and may indirectly support small intestinal function.
