Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) are prebiotic fibers that have been scientifically validated for their beneficial effects on the small intestine, particularly in terms of supporting gut health and modulating the gut microbiota. Multiple clinical studies have demonstrated that GOS selectively stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species in the small intestine and colon. This shift in the microbial community is associated with improved barrier function, enhanced immune response, and reduced inflammation in the gut. Randomized controlled trials in both adults and children have shown that supplementation with GOS can increase bifidobacterial populations and improve stool consistency, indicating a positive effect on intestinal transit and overall gut function.
Moreover, GOS supplementation has been shown to reduce the incidence and severity of gastrointestinal infections and to alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), such as bloating and abdominal pain.
