Fructo-Oligosaccharides (FOS) are short-chain fructans that function as prebiotics, meaning they selectively stimulate the growth and activity of beneficial gut bacteria, primarily in the colon but also with effects that begin in the small intestine. There is significant scientific evidence supporting their use for gut health, including effects on the small intestine. Studies have shown that FOS can enhance the population of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, which contribute to intestinal barrier function and immune modulation. Furthermore, FOS fermentation produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), such as butyrate, propionate, and acetate, which have beneficial effects on the integrity and function of the gut lining, including the small intestine.

Clinical trials and animal studies indicate that FOS can improve mineral absorption (such as calcium and magnesium) in the small intestine by altering gut pH and increasing solubility. Additionally, FOS intake has been associated with enhanced mucosal health and reduced incidence of certain gastrointestinal infections, which is relevant to small intestinal function. Overall, while most effects are prominent in the colon, there is a strong scientific rationale, supported by peer-reviewed studies, for the use of FOS in supporting the overall health and function of the small intestine as part of the digestive tract.
