Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Flavanones are a subclass of flavonoids commonly found in citrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruits, and lemons. They include compounds like hesperidin, naringin, and eriodictyol. Scientific research has shown that flavanones possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties that can be beneficial for intestinal health. Several studies indicate that these compounds may help modulate gut microbiota, reduce intestinal inflammation, and protect the integrity of the intestinal mucosa. For example, hesperidin and naringin have been observed in animal studies to reduce symptoms of colitis and improve markers of gut barrier function. Additionally, in vitro experiments suggest that flavanones can inhibit the growth of certain pathogenic bacteria while promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria. However, while preclinical evidence is promising, clinical studies in humans are limited and often involve small sample sizes or indirect outcomes. Thus, while the use of flavanones to support the small intestine is grounded in emerging scientific evidence, especially from animal and laboratory studies, more robust clinical trials are necessary to confirm their efficacy and establish appropriate dosages in humans. Overall, the current evidence provides a moderate level of scientific support for their use in supporting small intestine health.
