Chitin-Glucan is a polysaccharide fiber derived from the cell walls of fungi, notably Aspergillus niger. It has gained attention for its prebiotic properties, specifically for modulating the gut microbiota in the small intestine and colon. Scientific studies, primarily in vitro and animal models, have demonstrated that chitin-glucan can selectively stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, which are important components of the small intestinal microbiome. This prebiotic effect is associated with improved gut barrier function, modulation of immune responses, and the production of short-chain fatty acids, all of which support small intestinal health.

Human trials are limited but promising. A few small clinical studies have shown that supplementation with chitin-glucan can increase populations of beneficial gut microbes and may reduce markers of gut inflammation. For example, a 2015 randomized controlled trial found that chitin-glucan supplementation in healthy adults led to an increase in fecal Bifidobacterium levels. However, direct evidence linking chitin-glucan to specific improvements in small intestinal function or disease states (like IBS or SIBO) remains sparse.

In summary, the use of chitin-glucan to support the small intestine is justified by emerging scientific evidence, particularly its prebiotic effects. Yet, most data derive from laboratory or animal studies, with limited but growing clinical validation.
