Evidence supporting the use of: Bifidobacterium animalis lactis
For the body system: Small Intestines
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis is a probiotic bacterial strain commonly used in dietary supplements and functional foods aimed at supporting digestive health, including the small intestine. Scientific studies have demonstrated that this strain can survive passage through the gastrointestinal tract, including the small intestine, and transiently colonize the gut. Several randomized controlled trials indicate that B. animalis lactis supplementation can beneficially modulate the gut microbiota, enhance intestinal barrier function, and reduce symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort such as bloating and irregular bowel movements. For example, research published in Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics and Beneficial Microbes has found that certain strains (e.g., BB-12) can decrease intestinal transit time and support healthy gut motility. Additional studies suggest that B. animalis lactis may improve immune function in the gastrointestinal tract and help maintain the integrity of the mucosal lining, which is particularly relevant for small intestinal health. However, while these findings are promising, most effects are modest, strain-specific, and not exclusive to the small intestine but rather reflect general digestive tract support. Thus, the evidence base is moderate (around 3/5) and growing, but more targeted research specifically on small intestinal outcomes is needed.
