Bacillus species, particularly Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus subtilis, are increasingly used as probiotic supplements aimed at supporting small intestinal health. Scientific studies suggest that these spore-forming bacteria can survive harsh gastric conditions and reach the small intestine intact. Once there, they may help modulate the gut microbiota, inhibit pathogenic bacteria, and support the intestinal barrier function. Several randomized controlled trials and animal studies have demonstrated that supplementation with Bacillus probiotics can reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), improve gut motility, and decrease inflammation markers, all of which are relevant to small intestinal function. Notably, Bacillus strains have been shown to produce enzymes and antimicrobial compounds that may protect against small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and other dysbiosis-related conditions. However, the evidence base is still developing, and not all Bacillus strains have the same effects; most research has focused on Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus subtilis specifically. While promising, the overall quality and quantity of clinical evidence is moderate, justifying a rating of 3 out of 5. More large-scale, long-term human studies are needed to confirm the mechanisms and clinical benefits for small intestinal health.
