Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Swertia, a genus of plants in the Gentianaceae family (notably Swertia chirayita), has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Its use for sleep disturbances such as restless or disturbed sleep, however, is less prominent compared to its established role in treating digestive complaints, fever, liver disorders, and as a general bitter tonic. In some ethnobotanical records, Swertia species have been included in polyherbal formulations for their supposed calming or sedative effects, but these references are sparse and not widely recognized as a primary application. The scientific literature offers little to no direct evidence supporting the use of Swertia specifically for sleep-related issues. No significant clinical trials or mechanistic studies have validated its efficacy as a sleep aid. The available evidence for this use is therefore considered weak and primarily based on scattered traditional claims rather than systematic ethnomedical consensus or scientific validation. As a result, Swertia’s use for sleep is rated as very low in evidence and is mainly justified by minor traditional references rather than robust tradition or science.
