Evidence supporting the use of: Sarsaparilla
For the health condition: Skin (infections)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sarsaparilla (Smilax spp.) has a long history of traditional use for treating various skin diseases and infections. In traditional medicine systems, especially in Central and South America, as well as traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, sarsaparilla roots have been used as a remedy for skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and other dermatological issues. Historical records from the 16th century document its use in Europe for treating syphilis and skin lesions associated with it. The rationale behind its use lies in its purported blood-purifying and anti-inflammatory properties, which were believed to help clear skin eruptions and infections.
Scientific evidence supporting sarsaparilla’s efficacy for skin infections is limited. Some in vitro research has identified antibacterial and antifungal activity in sarsaparilla extracts, which could hypothetically contribute to its traditional use against skin infections. Additionally, certain steroidal saponins and flavonoids found in sarsaparilla have demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory studies. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the existing studies are not sufficient to confirm its effectiveness for treating skin infections or specific skin diseases.
In summary, while there is a strong traditional basis for the use of sarsaparilla in managing skin infections, scientific validation is modest and preliminary. The rating of 2 reflects the weight of historical use rather than high-quality modern evidence.
