Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ledebouriella (commonly known as Ledebouriella divaricata, and also referred to as Fang Feng in traditional Chinese medicine) is traditionally used in East Asian herbal medicine, particularly within Chinese medicine, for its supposed "wind-dispelling" properties. Historical medical texts cite its use in the management of skin disorders, especially those believed to be caused by "wind" invasion—such as itching, eczema, and some infections. Its traditional indications include relief from itching (pruritus), urticaria (hives), and various forms of dermatitis. The root is often included in formulations intended to relieve superficial skin conditions and to expel "wind-dampness".

With respect to skin infections, Fang Feng is more commonly used in combination with other herbs rather than as a primary antimicrobial agent. Modern pharmacological studies have identified some anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects in extracts of Ledebouriella, but direct, high-quality clinical evidence supporting its use specifically for treating skin infections in humans is lacking. In vitro studies sometimes demonstrate mild antibacterial effects, but these are not robust or widely replicated. As such, the justification for its use in skin infections largely stems from tradition, with limited scientific backing. The overall evidence level is therefore rated as 2, reflecting traditional use with some limited supportive laboratory findings but insufficient clinical validation.
