Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Labdanum, a resin obtained from the Cistus ladanifer plant, has been traditionally used for centuries in Mediterranean folk medicine for treating various skin ailments, including wounds and infections. Historical records and ethnobotanical surveys document its topical application for skin healing and as an antimicrobial agent. The resin contains a rich mixture of terpenes and other phytochemicals believed to have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. However, while in vitro studies have demonstrated some antimicrobial activity of Cistus extracts (including labdanum) against common skin pathogens, the evidence is limited, and clinical trials in humans are lacking. Thus, its reputation for treating skin infections is largely based on traditional use rather than robust scientific validation. The evidence level is rated as 2, reflecting suggestive but not conclusive support from both historical use and limited preclinical research.
