Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cyperus species, particularly Cyperus rotundus (commonly known as nutgrass or purple nutsedge), have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and various folk practices. In these systems, Cyperus is often applied topically or used in decoctions to treat skin infections, wounds, and inflammatory conditions. The traditional rationale is based on its purported antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. Some in vitro studies have suggested that extracts from Cyperus species may possess antibacterial and antifungal activities, but these findings are preliminary and mostly limited to laboratory settings. There is a lack of robust clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of Cyperus for skin infections in humans. Therefore, while traditional use is well documented, scientific validation remains limited, and the quality of evidence is low to moderate. Most support for Cyperus in treating skin infections comes from historical and ethnobotanical sources rather than contemporary clinical research.
