Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Buchu (Agathosma betulina and related species) is a South African medicinal plant traditionally used by indigenous peoples and later by colonial settlers. Its primary uses have historically centered around urinary tract complaints, kidney issues, and as a general diuretic. However, there is some traditional use of Buchu for skin infections and other skin-related concerns, typically in the form of topical applications such as poultices or infusions, where its aromatic leaves were applied to minor wounds or infections. This use is based on the plant’s reputed antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, attributed to volatile oils like diosphenol and various flavonoids present in the leaves. Despite this traditional background, there is a significant lack of robust scientific studies specifically investigating Buchu’s efficacy or safety for treating skin infections. Most modern research on Buchu focuses on its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in vitro, and often relates to urinary tract pathogens rather than skin pathogens. Therefore, while there is a documented history of traditional use for skin complaints, the evidence base is weak and mainly anecdotal, with no high-quality clinical trials to validate its effectiveness for skin infections. As such, its use for this purpose cannot be strongly endorsed beyond its historical context.
