Evidence supporting the use of: Argan tree
For the health condition: Skin (infections)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
The Argan tree (Argania spinosa) produces argan oil, which has been traditionally used in Morocco for various skin conditions, including infections. Modern scientific studies have validated some of these traditional uses. Argan oil is rich in fatty acids (notably oleic and linoleic acids), tocopherols (vitamin E), and polyphenols, all of which contribute to its skin-protective properties. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that argan oil possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities. For example, research published in journals such as Journal of Ethnopharmacology and Phytotherapy Research has shown that argan oil can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and fungi responsible for skin infections. Its high vitamin E content may also support skin healing and barrier function. However, while laboratory and animal studies provide a plausible basis for its effectiveness, large-scale clinical trials in humans are limited. Thus, while there is scientific validation supporting its use for minor skin infections and improving general skin health, the evidence is moderate and not definitive for all types of skin infections. The rating reflects that scientific support exists but is not comprehensive.
