Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ajuga, particularly species such as Ajuga reptans and Ajuga bracteosa, has been traditionally used in various folk medicine systems for the treatment of skin infections and wounds. Ethnobotanical surveys from regions such as the Himalayas, Turkey, and the Balkans report topical application of Ajuga preparations—often as poultices or ointments—for issues like minor wounds, cuts, ulcers, and skin inflammations. The rationale for use is partly based on the plant's reputed antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties as identified in traditional practice. Some studies have found that extracts of Ajuga species possess in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant activities, which could theoretically support its traditional application for skin conditions. However, these findings are limited to preliminary laboratory studies, and there is a lack of high-quality clinical trials or robust experimental evidence directly linking Ajuga extracts to effective treatment of skin infections in humans. Thus, while the traditional use is well documented and there is some preliminary scientific rationale, the evidence base is not strong, and more research is needed to substantiate these traditional claims.
