Ajoene is a sulfur-containing compound derived from garlic (Allium sativum) and has been investigated for its antimicrobial and antifungal properties, particularly in the context of skin infections. Scientific studies have demonstrated that ajoene possesses notable activity against dermatophytes (fungi that cause skin infections such as athlete’s foot and ringworm), as well as some bacteria associated with skin infections. For example, clinical and laboratory research has shown that topical application of ajoene can be effective in treating tinea pedis (athlete’s foot), with cure rates in some studies comparable to standard antifungal agents. Additionally, in vitro studies have confirmed ajoene’s ability to disrupt the growth and morphology of fungal hyphae. There is also preliminary evidence for its antibacterial effects, including activity against Staphylococcus aureus, a common cause of skin infections. However, most of the supporting data come from small clinical trials and laboratory experiments rather than large-scale, rigorous clinical studies. Thus, while there is scientific evidence supporting ajoene’s use for certain skin infections—particularly fungal infections—the overall level of evidence is moderate rather than robust.
